Projects

In Nitric, a project represents the collection of services, resources, and configurations that make up your application. Projects are lightweight and flexible, allowing you to structure them according to your preferences and needs.

The core requirement for a Nitric project is the presence of a nitric.yaml file, which defines essential details like the project name and the location of code entrypoints. These entrypoints are typically the services that act as the main components of your application, handling API routes, scheduled events, async message subscriptions, or large batch workloads.

Supported Languages

Typically frameworks are limited to a single programming language. However, due to how Nitric is built, it's able to support multiple programming languages. The supported languages include JavaScript/TypeScript, Python, Go, and Dart, among others. You can read about the supported languages or how to build your own custom SDK on the Languages page.

Project structure

Nitric doesn't enforce strict project structures. Typically, it only needs a nitric.yaml file to identify the project and eventually a nitric.[stack ID].yaml file to define the deployment target. Otherwise, projects can be organized in any way that makes sense for you or your team.

We recommend starting with a template, using the nitric new CLI command. These templates often contain an opinionated project structure to get you started quickly, but you can then modify the project structure to suit your needs.

This flexibility allows you to build apps as a single monolithic service, multiple microservices, or something else entirely.

The services directory is a common convention for Nitric projects, but you can organize your project however you like.

Project file

The nitric.yaml file indicates that the directory contains a project built with Nitric. The file defines the project's name and how to locate and run the entrypoints to your application (services). You can read about the nitric.yaml file on the project configuration page.

Stack files

Nitric projects can be deployed to multiple environments and cloud providers; stack files identify these deployment targets. These files can be created by running the nitric stack new CLI command. You can read more about stack files in the deployment section.

Project Infrastructure

A core tenant of Nitric is that applications should explicitly define the application architecture they need to operate successfully. We also believe configuration should be declarative and versioned, without needless duplication, so that changes can be tracked, automated and rolled back if necessary.

To achieve this Nitric enables services to declare their resource needs and how they intend to interact with those resources. These declarations can then be used to generate the cloud infrastructure automation needed to deploy and manage the services.

This approach allows Nitric to cleanly separate the concerns of application code and infrastructure configuration, and make the entire process more robust. Nitric doesn't replace infrastructure as code tools like Terraform or Pulumi, instead it defines a protocol by which applications can communicate their infrastructure needs to these tools.
